You might think: Core generally refers to your abdominal muscles.

You should know: This term also includes the muscles that run up the back and stretch down to the butt and the front and inner thighs, says Michele Olson, PhD, professor of physical education and exercise science at Auburn University–Montgomery, Alabama. This group of muscles is where much of the body’s strength comes from; you use it to kick a ball, lift a heavy box, and even stand up straight. Read More

Here Comes the Sun Festival Draws Yoga Fans to Central Park

October 22, 2008

There may have been rain at Health magazine’s second annual Here Comes the Sun festival, but that didn’t stop yoga fans from all over the country from gathering to celebrate fitness and well-being in New York City on Saturday, September 27. Tarps and tents shielded yogis and yoginis from the occasional drizzle, as they took classes led by expert YogaWorks instructors, relaxed with massages and beauty treatments, and sampled gourmet, good-for-you treats.

Proceeds from Here Comes the Sun benefited Step Up Women’s Network and the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Master yoga teacher Sara Ivanhoe, star of the Yoga for Dummies and 20-Minute Yoga Makeover DVDs, opened the event—the largest yoga festival ever to take place in Central Park—with a cleansing Detox Flow class, designed to flush out impurities and wake up the crowd. Other sessions throughout the day included Yoga for Beginners, Vinyasa Flow, Yoga for Insomnia, Meditation, and Mat Pilates. Read More

One thing I always feel that I’m missing when I take a yoga class is some real personal attention. I can usually follow along well enough—and occasionally the instructor will give me a little twist or a gentle push into the right position—but I’ve never actually made a real effort to make sure I’m doing the moves correctly. A Yoga Move That Ends Arm Jiggle

October 19, 2008

It’s happened to the best of us: You wave to a friend and your upper-arm flab flaps away. While batwings may make you want to spend all winter under wraps, there’s no need to avoid sleeveless tops and holiday dresses. Instead, tone arms with the Dolphin, an easy yoga pose that firms this problem area (and more!) by simultaneously toning the biceps, triceps, and shoulders. For best results, do this move three times a week. Read More

Peace and Courtesy on the Mat: 5 Ways to Avoid Yoga Rage

Our weekly Get Fit blog: The latest news, trends, research, and workout tips
October 7, 2008

Last weekend, Health magazine and Health.com held the second annual Here Comes the Sun festival in Central Park; it featured more than a dozen specialized yoga and Pilates classes. (Check back soon for video and more coverage of the event!) While Here Comes the Sun turned out to be a fabulous day of relaxation and refreshment, we know that yoga doesn’t always happen that way. This week’s Get Fit post comes from guest blogger and fellow Health.com staffer Jennifer Garam.

I live in urban New York, so I don’t drive, and therefore don’t experience road rage. I do, however, experience its distant cousin—yoga rage. As a yoga practitioner for the past 10½ years, perhaps I should embody a love for all humankind at this point. But still, nothing gets my yoga pants in a bunch like rude yogis and yoginis who don’t observe the rules of the road. So for rookies to seasoned class attendees, here’s a list of simple, common courtesies that every yoga practitioner should observe. Read More
