Call me curious. I want to know whether you use natural medicine in any way, shape, or form to stay well or treat illness.
How come I’m poking my nose into your business? Because a government study released in July that says 83 million of us spent $33.9 billion of our own money on visits to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners, CAM products, classes, and materials.
Of that dough, we spent $15.4 billion on non-vitamin, non-mineral natural products and practitioner visits; $4.2 billion for massage treatments; $4.1 billion on yoga, tai chi, and qi gong classes; $3.9 billion on chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation; and $3.1 billion on homeopathic doctors and medicines.
Of course, this spending is just a drop in the bucket when you consider that we spend $268.6 billion out of our own pockets for conventional medical care and supplies.
Where do you fit into this spectrum? Are you spending money on acupuncture, massage, homeopathy, or other nontraditional sorts of health care? Do you buy herbs at the health-food store or online? It would be terrific to hear from you—your input can shape future Health.com content.
So be honest, and tell us what you’re spending money on to stay well. We’ll tabulate your answers and get back to you soon with the results!

I would like to ask Sara Altshul about a natural floor cleaner recipe that she got from her mother in law. I’ve copied the text below and you can read that the mixture has a LEMONY SMELL but there are no lemons in the recipe, just murphys oil soap and VINEGAR. Is this a misprint – should lemon juice be one of the ingredients?? Thank you in advance for clarifying.
My Mother-in-Law’s Shiny Floor Cleaner
My beloved, 90 year-old Italian mother-in-law, Nonnie Maria, has a simple potion that cleans and shines her wood floors, and now I use it on mine (also nice for wooden cabinets and furniture). She adds about ¼ cup of Murphy’s oil soap (an all-natural product made from tree oils) and a splash of white vinegar to a gallon of hot water, and mops her floors with the milky liquid. You don’t have to rinse, and the lemony aroma smells like a summer night in the Italian countryside.
Hi Mary — The Murphy’s oil soap has a natural citrusy odor.
Best,
Sara
