From Health magazine
We started with a list of the 50 most popular beach and lake towns in the country (as defined by the total number of vacation days tourists spend there) from the American Automobile Association. To arrive at our top-10 list, our judges rated places in five categories: quality and cleanliness of air, water, and, sand; range of fitness opportunities; healthfulness of local restaurants; safety measures, including the presence of lifeguards, how close the town is to a major trauma center should an emergency come up, and the crime rate; and affordability of accommodations (based on the average rates in July, provided by Smith Travel Research).

Apparently in selecting the best beaches, you didn’t
concern yourself with nuclear bombs!!
Just off Tybee Island, many years ago a US Airforce
bomber dropped a nuclear bomb to facilitate an
emergency landing. The NUCLEAR BOMB obviously never
exploded & has never been recovered. It’s still
there. Leaking?????????//
Aren’t there 2 treated wastewater discharge sites on either side of Coronado Island? One is 3 miles offshore near Point Loma and the other is 10 miles offshore near Mission Bay. What are the water quality tests showing near Coronado Island? It’s beautiful, but clean?
As a Georgia resident, I have spent a lot of hours relaxing on Tybee’s beaches, however, I do have to take issue with it’s being lauded for water quality. The Savannah River, which empties out just to the north of the island, is one the most polluted rivers in America so I seriously doubt that water quality is magically unaffected. Next time you do a list like this, try doing some real research.
I agree with David. To the person/people who “researched” Tybee Island – you clearly have no idea what you are talking about ! The main shipping channel is within 1/2 mile of the beach, the water is always brown, there a bad rip currents, and the beach is closed from time to time because of excessive bacteria counts! Healthiest Beaches ?????
Bonita Springs, Florida truly deserves the recognition. I had vacationed on the Bonita beaches for 10 years and now live here for 7 years. All through these years I can count on one hand the times I saw a piece of trash. The area is comfortable and laid back yet with all the amenities and necessities in place.
The bomb was dropped in Wassaw Sound and it was inactive. Tybee Island has made considerable efforts to have one of the cleanest beaches in the country. I think they deserve this award. Congratulations Tybee!
but what about the hydrogen bomb in the ocean at Tybee (ranked #1) ?
that can’t possibly equal the healthiest beach

What about the dangerously high salmonella count in the Lake of the Ozarks this summer and the appearance of Osage Beach?
