You are completely right about the number of calories we (women) burn while doing all these exercises. I burn exactly the same number of calories while running on the treadmill or just running. However, I am curious if you know by any chance why we burn more calories on the treadmill than if we normally run? Also, do you think the calorie counter on ellipticals is correct? There is just no way that I burn as many calories while running and while being on the elliptical. For some reason the calories that are showed on the elliptical seem more than I would think I could burn.
I heart somewhere that the calories counter on ellipticals is not correct, is that right?

Geri- you are right, the calorie counter on elliptical machines is not very accurate, and you are definitely burning more running on a tredmill for the same amount of time. As far as the tredmill goes, its roughly 100 calories burned per mile ran, obviously this is not exact but its a good figure to keep in mind. I’m really not sure about the elliptical, I’ve heard that the real number of calories burned can be as low as half of what the machine displays, although when working out I factor it into my day as about 2/3 of what it says I’ve burned. Thank you for your response. I burn around 100 calories per mile ran as well on the treadmill. However, this is only when I enter my weight and my age. If I do not enter anything in the treadmill’s menu then it shows that I burn a little more. This is weird. I borrowed a sports watch that a friend of mine has, which is very accurate it measures your heart beating, calories, time, and everything you need. Of course you need to put below your chest the strap that sends signals to the watch. What I found out is that when I entered my age, weight, height, and everything in the watch’ menu and I run for a mile on the treadmill it showed that I only burned like 70 calories. I guess a lot less than even on the treadmill. Now I really do not know what to believe anymore.

I believe you can burn more calories on the treadmill if you’ve raised the incline to an 8 or above which simulates running uphill. What I’ve found is that circuit training where you’re doing exercises for specific muscle groups with cardio done in between each set keeps your muscles and body “guessing.” I also think workouts that combine pilates, yoga and ballet, such as The Bar Method are incredibly effective in terms of really strengthening one’s core muscle, which as we know, is the center of the universe!
