Not too surprised by this, especially the smoking part. Good news for the future though.

From other articles that I've read, medical schools offered electives just like many high schools and colleges which can leave education off-balance. Nutrition wasn't always the important elective until more recently. Nutrition and exercise have been concerns of some for many years, but more awareness of work and family duties for others will offer opportunities for people to discuss nutrition and exercise ideas and create positive balance as much as possible.

I think your article infered that doctors have a relatively undemanding schedule compared to "lawyers, truck drivers, working moms, or people who have taken on a second job." This of course is amazingly off-based. During residency, many doctors work 90-100 hours a week, often with no breaks in a roughly 13-30 shift. And of course, residency lasts anywhere from 3-10 years. Many doctors also find once residency is over, their schedule is no less demanding. This in itself is more than many of those professions, or with an addition of a extra job. I do agree with you that doctors should be in much better health than they generally are, however. If you don't believe me, look it up

Western medicine is based on treating disease.

Not preventing disease

And certainly not promoting health.

So, it comes as no surprise that docs are no better than the general population when it comes to eating and moving in a way to promote health.

Some communities around the world are trying to make exercise a central part of daily life. ( http://healthhabits.wordpress.com/2008/04/15/fitness-alfresco/ )

Programs like this may help to shift our thinking away from disease and towards health
