I use my dog to motivate me to work out first thing in the morning. She's ready to walk at 6am so I bundle up and use her stops as stations to do leg lifts, lunges, step aerobics on the curb, and jumping jacks. After our 20 min walk I'm ready to get on the eliptical and lift weights for another 20 min or so indoors.

Winter is very hard for me, it's not so much about motivation as asthma. I love to take long walks outside, but when the air gets so cold, my lungs don't agree with such plans. I am working with my doc. on finding the right treatment for me, so perhaps this winter will be better for my walks, and I can always do my yoga, resistance training and favorite dance-based exercise videos at home. I could go to the gym (military husband perk, free fitness center), but the hours that are best for me always seem to be peak gym hours. So, I keep an arsenal of videos and equipment at home, and as a former certified fitness instructor I know how to use them properly, and, more importantly, I know to respect my limits as I always told my students, so when the asthma says no, we do some gentle yoga or on the worst of days, rest. Of course this year, just as I was getting into my chilly weather workout groove, I seriously strained my LCL so that is a fitness monkey wrench all on its own. I hope that my new physical therapist will not only help my injury in office, but help me get back on track as my knee heals.

Come winter time (a bone chilling Canadian winter), I NEED to set goals and challenges for myself.

In the summer, the beautiful weather makes it easier to enjoy out of doors exercise.

But come winter, with the cold and reduced daylight, this external motivation freezes on the vine.

As well, our bodies are designed to store extra body-fat as the temperature drops...blubber is a fine insulator.

So, for me, this winter will see me get my body-fat under 10%. I have set up a photo shoot for the middle of January...and paid in advance.

As well, I have some physical performance goals - weight lifting totals that I intend to break.

What's your motivation???
