There may have been rain at Health magazine’s second annual Here Comes the Sun festival, but that didn’t stop yoga fans from all over the country from gathering to celebrate fitness and well-being in New York City on Saturday, September 27. Tarps and tents shielded yogis and yoginis from the occasional drizzle, as they took classes led by expert YogaWorks instructors, relaxed with massages and beauty treatments, and sampled gourmet, good-for-you treats.
Proceeds from Here Comes the Sun benefited Step Up Women’s Network and the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Master yoga teacher Sara Ivanhoe, star of the Yoga for Dummies and 20-Minute Yoga Makeover DVDs, opened the event—the largest yoga festival ever to take place in Central Park—with a cleansing Detox Flow class, designed to flush out impurities and wake up the crowd. Other sessions throughout the day included Yoga for Beginners, Vinyasa Flow, Yoga for Insomnia, Meditation, and Mat Pilates.
Courtney Conroy, 27, of Hoboken, N.J., sampled grilled chicken rolls from Josie’s Restaurant and took Ivanhoe’s Yoga for a Beautiful You class before getting a facial and mini–makeover from L’Oréal Paris. “This was a great opportunity to practice with some of the best and brightest stars in the yoga world,” she said. “The variety of classes let me get my Zen on while still challenging my body and mind. The yummy treats didn’t hurt, either!”
Lunchtime snacks were provided by the Quaker Oats Company, Edy’s/Dryer’s Slow Churned frozen yogurt, and BethennyBakes cookies and muffins—supplied by celebrity natural foods chef and Health magazine contributor Bethenny Frankel. Senior editor Francis Largeman-Roth, RD, spoke to visitors about nutrition and heart health, and the California Almond Board performed blood pressure and heart rate checks.
Nintendo WiiFit demonstrations and massages from New York’s Oasis Day Spa kept visitors busy between yoga classes; others lined up for Henna tattoos and tarot card readings. The festival was topped off with an energetic performance by Australian singer/songwriter Delta Goodrem.
Jody Boteler, 27, also from Hoboken, appreciated the variety of activities available and the excuse to get out of the house on a cloudy day. “It was exactly what I needed: A day of relaxation, strength, meditation, health, and friendship. The day was lovely, even though the sun didn’t actually make an appearance. I’m already looking forward to next year!”
