Breathe Easier: American Cities With the Most Unpolluted Air

About 50 million Americans live in places where air pollution threatens their health, according to the latest numbers from the American Lung Association.

Coal-fired power plants in, say, Pittsburgh spew hazardous particles that increase heart disease risks.

And car emissions from heavy traffic in cities like L.A. raise ozone levels and worsen allergy and asthma symptoms. But this isn’t true everywhere. Here are five cities with 500,000-plus populations that have the safest air:

1. Honolulu, HI
2. Tucson, AZ
3. Albuquerque, NM
4. Colorado Springs, CO
5. Las Vegas, NV
