I think that Lanny's comment was misleading... If you read the article, it states that caffeine had positive effects on male testers with ALS but had negative effects on female testers with ALS... that means that caffeine gives you ALS, it just means that if you already have ALS, you should watch out. An article linked to the post Lanny posted actually suggested that caffeine was good as an antioxidant to help clean up free radicals.

Interesting to know that caffeine is not dehydrating. I have also heard that it is one of the best antioxidants available.

Caffeine is indeed a performance enhancing drug. Marijuana is not. Yet getting caught with THC in your system will get you in trouble in professional sports, but caffeine won't. This just underlines the nonsensical position of those who would like to draw a sharp dividing line between so-called drugs an "non-" drugs.

Excuse me, but Caffeine is a DRUG, if it makes you perform better at the track, wouldn't that be considered a performance enhancing DRUG?

Yes indeed it helps before a run. An hour ahead is a good bet, since thats how long it takes to begin to peak, and too much too soon does aggravate my guts when running. I started drinking coffee when I was nine year old, never more than 2-3 cups a day max and 30 years later, its still not a problem. The DR is right, that spike in glucose then insulin is great when you are actively glucose, bad when you are not. It'll make you fat or bloated. No coincidence we drink most of our caffeine at the start of, or during very active parts of the day. Probably why we we have anecdotally perceived it as such a benefit, not a detriment to performance over the last two hundred years or so.
