Here’s welcome news: You may have inherited your mom’s slow-mo metabolism, but you’re not stuck with it. New research shows you can trick your body into burning calories more efficiently, especially if you hit the gym. By strength-training just a couple of times a week, for example, you’ll reverse 50 percent of the seemingly inevitable metabolism slow-down that comes with age, says Gary Hunter, PhD, a professor of human studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. So take control of your metabolism by making these boosters part of your routine—and (finally) stop sweating every cookie.

Great article, Ms. Richards.I love how you are pushing the interval training and back it up with the evidence on EPOC. EPOC is highest after high intensity exercises.
The one thing I would add is to increase you daily caloric burn by taking the stairs instead of the elevator; walk to the store instead of drive; make a family walk after dinner a new ritual.
But seriously, excellent article. It’s as far away from the 3 sets of 10 reps, bodybuilding based advice that is in most health publications.
I really appreciate this straight-forward article. It has practical advice in a concise and balanced presentation. There are so many articles with various opinions about what works, but this one has all the evidence based things in one place. Thank you!
