Garnier Fructis Body & Volume Fortifying Shampoo ($3.99)
Lather up with this volumizing shampoo, and your hair immediately feels different—like there’s actually more of it. (Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean it’s bushy.) Fructose and glucose coat hair shafts to give them more volume, while vitamins B3 and B6 strengthen strands and lock in moisture.
Best For: Lifeless hair in need of body and bounce
Best Styling Product
PureOlogy DryShine Style ($20)
Smooth this gold-flecked pomade through damp or dry strands, and you get just enough control to keep hair in place without any sticky residue. It also has heliogenol, a UV-protecting sunflower-seed extract, that prevents color-treated hair from fading in sunlight.
Best For: Light-to-medium hold
Best Conditioner
Burt’s Bees Grapefruit & Sugar Beet Conditioner ($7.99)
You’ll be able to run a comb through even the kinkiest of tresses after using this lightweight conditioner. Essential oils, including lemon, lime, and tangerine, are to thank for the unmistakable shine that looks glossy but not greasy.
Best For: Dry or damaged hair

burts bees is awful and garnier uses sulfate ingredients, which strip your hair of color and moisture faster. Drug store products like garnier fructis shampoo, however, use sulfate ingredients as fillers.
Exactly!Garnier Fructis does have Sulfate.
This is totally confusing– How can you rate these products the best if they contain ingredients that strip your hair of natural moisture? Just want to know. I am an old hairdresser.
Does anyone answer the comments or is “Fortune Magazine” and advertisers behind the “information” we are getting in these articles?
First of all, Garnier’s “fruit complex” destroys chemically treated hair (esp. color treated) and if you live in sunny climates, will dry your hair to death.
Same goes for Burts Bees. You can’t toss in grapefruit and lemon and expect color treated hair to accept it. Thats why there are so FEW hair products that use these ingredients.
As for Purology, a much more upscale product, but smells like crap.
voted number one by the consumer? Is it because when questioned about product, they simply recall an advertisement or go by the smell… fruit extract in products, do just that “They extract the color from your hair” they act as a natural chelator. Although in a given moleculer breakdown of 150-300 it can seal the cuticle, larger moleculer weight than that will only temporary make the hair feel good thats why frequent shampoo changes help. Lanza shampoo have human hair keratin as a main protein. You can use it for 10 years and never have a build up on your hair. What is better? healing your damaged cuticles with a fruit or veggie or use actual human hair amino acids????
Corporate america…painting a picture and everyone believing it!!!!
I’m desperately looking for a healthy shampoo. I am even thinking of just using conditioner alone? I am using TRESemme right now , but I found that it still has some harmful chemicals. Can anyone help?
I absolutely love the Made from Earth Peppermint conditioner. So far its my favorite one from all the organic lines I have tried. Made from Earth is completely natural – unlike other brands who may claim to be natural and/or organic (but somehow still manage to sneak the icky chemicals in) – so that alone makes this an awesome product for someone who’s concerned about what their beauty products are made from.
After a few days of consistent use, my hair is softer and silkier than with any other product I’ve tried. The smell is a little strong, but fades to a nice subdued floral scent after the hair dries. I’ve gotten many compliments on my hair since I’ve gone back to using the Made from Earth conditioner. I’ve spent a few years trying out all the “natural” brands to find the perfect line for my hip length hair…again, of all those supposedly natural brands – Made from Earth seems to be the only one that really is purely natural, and on top of that, has been the best for my hair.
